Chef’s Corner with Dakota Weiss of Shangri-LA

Nestled on Ocean Avenue The Dining Room is a creative, eclectic, and fun restaurant with a view! Located directly across the street from the big blue Pacific Ocean and on level two of the Hotel Shangri-LA Hotel, it’s one of the best dining views around. Chef Dakota Weiss cooks up some amazing comfort food….but with a fresh, approachable twist.

journeyPod enjoyed an amazing tasting with Chef Dakota. Our favorites included the grilled figs with crispy fruit bread, Artic Char, and the rack of lamb with harissa potato puree.

Chef Dakota joined journeyed over coffee and gave us some inside scoop on where to eat, and even some cooking tips.

Where do you like to dine on your night off?

There is a little place right down the street that is my new hang-out. It’s called Blue Plate Oysterette. Love it!

What do you look for when you first enter a restaurant?

I look to see how crowded the place is. They say that is always a good sign of how good the food is…and it is so true. If the place is empty, do not enter. I also take note of the décor.

What is the strangest thing you ever tasted?

I ate tiger when I was in Shanghai. I remember it being “stringy.” It was doctored up with so many spices and sauces, I really cannot remember much else. I also have tasted dog and duck tongue.

Is there anything you won’t eat?

Well, I’m allergic to fish. I cannot eat cooked fish. But, I can eat sushi, which I love.

What advice can you offer to cooking enthusiasts?

Keep burn crème handy. Don’t be afraid to get hurt—‘cause you will!

Tell me about the desserts you prepared for us. They were very unique…something I wouldn’t expect to eat at a restaurant-but very “comforting” and very yummy.

Yes! The candied apples and poporn balls. They are my version of “traditional holiday treats” that you would make at your home for friends, family. Both will be on the menu during the holiday season.
