Chef’s Corner with Chef Jason Bowlin of Catch at Casa Del Mar

Catch at Casa Del Mar offers a menu from Executive Chef Jason Bowlin that is a stone’s throw away from reeling it in yourself. Did we mention the fresh seafood? This Santa Monica restaurant also features a wine bar for tastings. And steak too. Even a gluten-free menu. Or just come enjoy the view. journeyPod.com enjoyed amazing ocean views over our dinner of oysters with caviar, Dungeness Crab Salad, Grilled Octopus Salad, Striped Bass and an amazing aged porterhouse steak.

It’s your Last Super. Who’s cooking?

What’s on the menu? My Grandmother. I miss her. She always made simple things like baked apples, ham, fresh green beans, and homemade clover rolls.

If you weren’t a Chef, what would you be?

I told my wife I’d be in jail! But seriously, I have always loved to work outside: growing things, farming, gardening. I’d probably be a landscape architect or a farmer.

What’s the most unique ingredient you ever cooked with?

My chef buddies bought a cobra heart in a bottle of liquor back from their travels. We diced the cobra heart and cooked it like liver and onions and ate it with bread.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve eaten? (Besides the cobra heart!)

Blood soup and blood jelly in Vietnam.

What’s the most memorable meal you have cooked?

Actually, two come to mind. The first was Thanksgiving Dinner for my family soon after I started working with Wolfgang Puck. The second, was when I was on Iron Chef and I made Battle Pork.

Is there anything you don’t eat?

Green Bell Peppers. I just don’t like them. The only fast food I eat is In N Out.

What’s the craziest request you have ever received?

LA is home to crazy requests! In fact, when I worked at Wolfgang’s restaurant Granita up in Malibu, I actually kept a book of all the crazy requests. I remember someone once ordered scrambled eggs with grape jelly.
